What Is True ROAS? Actual vs Reported ROAS Explained
Every Shopify merchant running ads sees a ROAS number on their Meta or Google dashboard. That number is wrong. Not slightly off — structurally inflated by 30–50% for most stores. True ROAS is the corrected number after accounting for the three biggest sources of overcounting.
The three sources of ROAS inflation
1. Brand cannibalization (18–25%)
When someone searches "your brand name" on Google, they were already going to buy. Brand search campaigns claim credit for these sales even though the ad didn’t cause them. This inflates your reported ROAS by counting organic revenue as ad-driven. Learn more about ad cannibalization.
2. Creative fatigue (12–22%)
Ads lose effectiveness over time as the same audience sees them repeatedly. Most merchants don’t notice the decline until CTR drops 40%+ and CPA doubles. During the decline phase, spend continues but incremental revenue does not. See our guide on detecting creative fatigue.
3. Channel overlap (8–15%)
When a customer sees a Meta ad and later clicks a Google ad before buying, both platforms claim the full conversion. 120 Meta conversions + 95 Google conversions can equal 147 Shopify orders — not 215. The 68 extras are double-counted. Read more about channel overlap and double attribution.
A worked example: 4.0x reported → 2.1x true ROAS
A store spending $10,000/month on ads sees a combined platform ROAS of 4.0x ($40,000 in attributed revenue). After correcting for cannibalization ($8,800), creative fatigue ($1,800 in wasted spend), and channel overlap ($4,000 in double-counted revenue), the true ROAS is approximately 2.1x. That’s a gap of $15,800/month in phantom value. Read the full case study breakdown or the manifesto on why ROAS numbers are wrong.
How to find your true ROAS
The gold standard is incrementality testing — holdout experiments that prove which ads drive real sales. For a quick estimate, use the free Ripplux Ad Waste Calculator. Enter your spend, revenue, and reported ROAS — you’ll see the gap in 30 seconds.
